Aquaculture

                                                   Aquaculture

Aquaculture, also known as aquafarming, is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic plants. . Though there are some types of aquaculture like Algaculture which is the cultivation of kelp or Seaweed and other Algae, the growing of Cultured Pearls, the primary form of aquaculture is Fish Farming or Pisciculture. Aquaculture involves cultivating freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled conditions, and can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is the harvesting of wild fish broadly speaking, finfish and shellfish fisheries can be conceptualized as akin to hunting and gathering while aquaculture is akin to agriculture. Mari culture refers to aquaculture practiced in marine environments and in underwater habitats. The farming of fish is the most common form of aquaculture. It involves raising fish commercially in tanks, ponds, or ocean enclosures, usually for food.

Particular kinds of aquaculture include fish farming, shrimp farming, oyster farming, aquaculture, and the cultivation of ornamental fish. Particular methods include aquaponics and integrated multi-tropic aquaculture, both of which integrate fish farming and plant farming. A facility that releases juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement a species’ natural numbers is generally called as a fish hatchery.

Eligibility

The eligibility for most of these courses is the study of science till class 12 in school. As the degree in aquaculture is a science degree, one needs to have studied science till class 12. Most institutes also make it mandatory to have studied biology till class 12. However, it is best to check with individual institutes to see what their requirements are. The cut offs for these institutes vary from institute to institute. Whether one needs to appear for any of the competitive exams or whether the school leaving exam is sufficient depends on the institute.

Career Objects

The job prospects are not limited in this field. One can find employment in fish farms in the areas of design, construction and management as well. The CFTRI’s Biology department, Indian Council of Agricultural Research; the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) and the MPEDA are all encouraging and boosting the aquaculture industry in India. For research and development, one can be involved either with academic institutions or with the research and development sections of fishing companies or pharmaceutical companies. Teaching posts are available at all the institutes offering courses in aquaculture. One can either find a chance in industry or in pharmaceutical companies or go in for research and development and work as Associate-Research Scientist Aquaculture Consultant, Relationship Manager-Aquaculture, Asst.-Technical Manager Genetics, Teacher and Lecturer. One can also find jobs which try to provide equipment required in fish cultivation like nets, fishing vessels, machines or equipments for cleaning, salting and freezing fishes. Two low level jobs associated with the aquaculture industry are those of a fishery inspector and a deep sea fishery worker. One can get a job as a fishery inspector whose duty is to transport fish seed safely to different fishery stations.

Pay/earnings

Payment in this field is not same; it depends upon post and work profile. But it is between 25,000to 80,000 or more. Aquaculture is a viable career option. With large paths of development lying ahead, the job returns are not limited. For teachers, the remuneration is as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. Even while one is a research fellow, one can get a salary of Rs 29,000 per month. For professors, the salary can go up to Rs 45,000 per month. Farming supervisors can get a salary between Rs 25,000 to Rs 45,000.

                                                B.Sc. Aquaculture

B.Sc. Aquaculture or Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture is an undergraduate Aquaculture course of 3 Years. Aquaculture is applied science at the most practical level and is more than just fish farming. Aquaculture includes the production of molluscs (including oysters, abalone, mussels and scallops) and crustaceans (shrimps, prawns, freshwater and marine crayfish), and even aquatic plants such as seaweed. The focus in this degree is on combining a strong background in the natural sciences with an understanding of health and safety issues, practical and management issues, and business and communication skills. Subjects studied under this degree are- Aquaculture, Zoology and Biochemistry. The course is career orienting in nature that opens many jobs after its completion in various fields.

Eligibility

Minimum qualification for this course is 10+2 with science (PCM/PCB/Agriculture) or its equivalent examination with a minimum aggregate 70% of marks. Many colleges and institutes conduct their own entrance examination to get admission in B.Sc. degree course.

Career Objects

Aquaculture is a food production method that enables increasing the living standards as well as provides food security. A huge range of fishes, plants and aquatic animals are studied in this area. After passing it, they will become familiar with and be able to compare and contrast the major types and components of aquaculture systems, species and factors affecting system sustainability. Students will be able to identify global cultural, social, economic and historical factors that affect aquaculture development and be able to describe specifically how these factors affect aquaculture. Skilled professionals can seek employment in these areas such as in bioinformatics, food industry, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry, research institutes and in water conservation. One can work as Aquaculture Consultant, Asst.-Technical Manager Genetics, Relationship Manager-Aquaculture, Associate-Research Scientist, Teacher & Lecturer.
